Are you a bride-to-be who is looking for the perfect wedding dress? If so, you’re in luck! This blog post is packed full of tips for finding the dress of your dreams. Whether you’re shopping at a bridal salon or online, we’ve got you covered. So sit back, relax, and prepare to be inspired!
Tip #1: Do Your Research
Before you start dress shopping, it’s important to do your research. First, take some time to browse wedding dress websites and magazines. This will give you an idea of the different styles and silhouettes that are available. Then, narrow down your options by deciding which style you prefer. A-line? Ballgown? Mermaid? Once you’ve figured out the silhouette you want, it’s time to start looking for dresses in that style. Next consider the fabric, the weight, the time of year, and current dress trends that you are loving (did someone say cape?!)
Tip #2: Set a Budget
Wedding dresses can be expensive, so it’s important to set a budget before you start looking. This will help you narrow down your options and avoid spending more than you can afford. When setting your budget, keep in mind that the cost of the dress is not the only expense you’ll incur. You’ll also need to factor in the cost of alterations, which can range from $100 to $500 or more depending on the extent of the work required, as well as the cost of any veil, cape, or other accessories.
Tip #3: Shop Early
If you’re on a tight timeline, wedding dress shopping can be a bit stressful. To make things easier on yourself, start shopping early. Ideally, you should begin looking for dresses nine to twelve months before your wedding date. This will give you plenty of time to find your dress and get it altered to fit perfectly. If looking in a shorter time frame, consider BHLDN or other retailers that may have your dress off-the-rack.
Tip #4: Make an Appointment
When shopping at a bridal salon, it’s important to make an appointment. Most salons require appointments for wedding dress consultations, so be sure to call ahead and schedule one. This will help ensure that you have enough time to try on dresses and make a decision. Note in your appointment call whether there is a sitting fee, the number of attendants you can bring with you, and whether you can bring your own beverages. One note on beverages – please do not bring red wine, coke, or any dark-colored beverage to these appointments; these moments were made for champagne.
Tip #5: Bring a Support Team
When dress shopping, it’s helpful to bring along a support team. This can include your mom, your bridesmaids, your future in-laws, or any other life cheerleaders you want. However, we recommend you keep your support team to no more than 4 people. Remember that saying about too many cooks in the kitchen? The same principle applies here…
Tip #6: Bring Heels and Shapewear
When you go wedding dress shopping, be sure to bring a pair of heels and some shapewear. This will help you get a better sense of how the dress will look on your wedding day, if your undergarments show through, and how short the seamstress should hem the dress. Plus, it’s always a good idea to have some extra support when trying on dresses so you feel your best!
Tip #7: Consider the Overall Wedding Theme
It’s best to go wedding dress shopping after you have decided on a venue and overall feel, so you can pick a dress to match. For example, if you’re having a rustic backyard wedding, a bohemian wedding dress might be a perfect choice. If you’re planning an industrial museum wedding, a ballgown may not be the right fit. Talk to your stylist about your day so they can help you pick some dresses to match.
Tip #8: Ask If They Provide Day-Of Bridal Stylist Services
Many upscale wedding shops now offer a stylist that will come on your wedding day to help you prepare and get into your gown. They will also help you style your wedding day look, do any last-minute minor alterations, and even help you bustle your dress. This is a great choice for brides who want to ensure their look is executed flawlessly (and who do not want to worry about someone accidentally ruining their dress with a steamer!)
Now that you know the tips for finding the perfect wedding dress, it’s time to get shopping! Remember to do your research, set a budget, and bring along a “support” team (including shapewear!). And, most importantly, have fun trying on dresses and finding the one that makes you feel like a bride-to-be goddess!
